How Long Does It Take to Build a Mobile Pet Grooming Truck?

Short answer: 6 to 8 weeks from signed contract to keys in hand for a standard mobile pet grooming truck build at our shop. Custom or oversized builds (dual-tub, 22+ ft, premium climate control) run 8 to 12 weeks. Sourcing time on rare equipment can add 1 to 3 weeks. The big specialty builders run 8 to 16 weeks for new orders. Here is what happens during each week.

Standard mobile pet grooming build timeline at Zion

Week 0: Contract signed, deposit received, design lock. We finalize layout based on your menu of services, route plan, and equipment preferences.

Weeks 1-2: Equipment sourcing and chassis prep.

  • Long-lead-time items ordered: chassis (if not in inventory), generator, hydraulic tub, hydraulic table, rooftop A/C units, water heater
  • Chassis goes through structural prep: subframe reinforcement, floor prep and insulation, underbody welding
  • Plumbing routing planned, water tanks ordered

Weeks 2-4: Structural and infrastructure work.

  • Insulation installed
  • Walls clad (FRP standard, stainless if specified)
  • Aluminum diamond plate floor laid with sealed seams and integrated drain
  • Water tanks mounted (50 gal fresh / 75 gal grey standard)
  • Tankless water heater plumbed and gas-supplied
  • Electrical service panel and main wire pulls
  • Generator mounted and exhaust routed
  • Propane lines (if equipment is gas-fired)

Weeks 3-5: Equipment installation and commissioning.

  • Hydraulic tub installed with foot-pedal lift
  • Hydraulic grooming table mounted
  • High-velocity dryer installed and tested
  • Stainless prep counters and storage cabinets installed
  • Rooftop A/C units installed and wired
  • LED interior and exterior lighting
  • Vacuum / hair containment system
  • Service window with awning, screen, and self-closing doors

Weeks 5-7: Wrap, finish, and commissioning.

  • Vinyl wrap design finalized and printed
  • Wrap installation (3-5 days for a full wrap)
  • Final electrical commissioning
  • Plumbing pressure test
  • Generator load test under full equipment running
  • Water heater output verification
  • A/C cooling capacity verification

Weeks 7-8: Pre-delivery inspection and delivery.

  • Full kitchen photographed for build records
  • Customer walk-through (in person at our shop, or via video for distant customers)
  • Documentation packet assembled (build certifications, equipment cut sheets, plumbing test certificates, electrical schematics)
  • Truck loaded for delivery to customer

For a 16-ft cutaway truck on a Ford E-450 chassis, this whole sequence reliably hits 6-8 weeks. We have done it 300+ times across food trucks, pet mobiles, and other mobile commercial builds.

What slips a timeline

Late design changes. If you want to swap a single tub for a dual-tub setup in week 4, the layout changes ripple. We can accommodate but it adds 1-2 weeks. Lock design in week 0-1 and stick to it.

Equipment back-orders. Specialty equipment (large hydraulic tubs from Master Equipment, premium A/C units, certain generator models) can have manufacturer lead times beyond what was quoted at order. We track this closely but cannot fix supplier delays.

Chassis delays. If the customer is sourcing their own used chassis, that timeline is on them. We do not start build-out until the chassis is at our shop with title in hand.

Wrap design. The most common cause of delays. Customers using their own designer often run slow. Our in-house wrap shop turns art around in 5-7 days if you use them. Lock wrap art by week 4 to avoid back-end delays.

What does NOT slip a timeline

Weather. Holidays. Most equipment substitutions (we sub functionally identical units when needed and notify the customer).

How the major specialty builders compare

Public lead times from competitors as of 2026:

  • Wag’n Tails. 16-26 weeks for new builds. Higher demand, longer queue.
  • Hanvey. 12-20 weeks typical.
  • Gryphon Trailers. 8-14 weeks for trailers.
  • Ambers Mobile. 10-16 weeks.
  • Zion Pet Mobiles. 6-8 weeks standard, 8-12 weeks custom.

The bigger specialty builders have longer queues because their order backlogs are deeper. We have a smaller queue, faster turnaround, and the same build standards. Tradeoff: if your route depends on the resale value of a Wag’n Tails badge, the longer wait may be worth it. If you care about getting on the road faster with a quality build, we can usually beat their timeline by 6-12 weeks.

Can you rush a build?

For an in-stock chassis, off-the-shelf equipment, and no specialty plan review, we have done 4-week rush builds. Customer pays a 12-15 percent rush premium because we have to pull resources from other builds. We will do it but we tell customers honestly that 6-8 weeks is better quality, less stress on the team, and the truck reflects it.

What customers tend to underestimate in their planning

Three things first-time operators do not account for:

Permit application time. Local business license: 2-6 weeks to issue. State sales tax license: 1-2 weeks. Health inspection (if your jurisdiction requires it for pet care): scheduling can add 2-4 weeks. Start permits while we build, not after delivery.

Insurance binding time. Carriers usually need photos of the finished truck before binding the policy. Plan on 1-2 weeks after delivery for full insurance to be in force. We provide the photos as part of pre-delivery.

Customer acquisition ramp. Even with a finished truck, you need 60-90 days to fill your schedule. Plan to operate at 40-60 percent capacity for the first 8 weeks while bookings ramp.

Total time from “I want to start a mobile pet grooming business” to “fully booked schedule”: typically 4-6 months if you start everything in parallel. Same as food trucks.

Talk us through your timeline

If you have a specific deadline (event season, lease start, partner availability), tell us at the start. We can prioritize or flex if needed. If your timeline is unrealistic, we will be honest about it. Get a free quote or call 719-722-2537.
